Prayer to Saint Barbara

Saint Barbara, known in the Eastern Orthodox Church as the Great Martyr Barbara, was an early Christian Greek saint and martyr. Saint Barbara is often portrayed holding a chalice and sword and a tower behind, sometimes with cannons depicted by her side (as in beside picture of an holly card). 

As one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, Barbara continues to be a popular saint in modern times, perhaps best known as the patron saint of armourers, artillerymen, military engineers, miners and others who work with explosives because of her legend's association with lightning, and also of mathematicians. 

A 15th-century French version of her story credits her with thirteen miracles, many turn on the security she offered that her devotees would not die before getting to make confession and receiving extreme unction.

Your feast day is celebrated on December 4.

"Saint Barbara, your courage is much stronger than the forces of hurricanes and the power of lightening.

Be always by our side so that we, like you, may face all storms, wars, trials and tribulations with the same fortitude with which you faced yours.

O Beautiful Maiden once imprisoned in a high tower, protect us from the lightning and fire that rages in the sky and the discord of war.

Keep us alert and protect us from the dangers that surround us.

Holy Mary Mother of Jesus intercessor for us all; we pray to assure receiving of the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist at the hour of our death.

Through Jesus Christ Our Lord, 

Amen!"

Prayer to Saint Jerome

Jerome (347/420) was a Latin priest, confessor, theologian, and historian, commonly known as Saint Jerome. He was born at Stridon, a village near Emona on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia.

He is best known for his translation of most of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate), and his commentaries on the Gospels. His list of writings is extensive.

Patronage of archaeologists; archivists; Bible scholars; librarians; libraries; school children; students; translators; Morong e Rizal. He's feast is celebrated on September, 30.

Prayer to St. Jerome 

(for insight)

"Through your anger and confrontations you remind us that we all have a duty to confront others from time to time. 

You also remind us that we have a duty to examine ourselves and confront our own weaknesses and harmful behaviours. 

Your life teaches that I must accept others for who they are. 

You taught of the danger of self-righteousness; of the importance of reflecting upon one of Jesus most insightful teachings: "Let the man who has no sin on his conscience throw the first stone." 

In the light of your teachings, Saint Jerome, help me to see my own self clearly. 

Help me to confront my own biases and to act to change others only out of love. 

If I see that I have the duty to confront another, I ask you to be with me during those necessary but unpleasant moments of confrontation.

Help me to remember that love alone can make changes for the good. 

Amen"

O som da prece:

Na língua hebraica, o Pai Nosso, a oração ensinada por Jesus, possui uma cadência e sonoridade que se perdem nas traduções. O texto hebraico, reproduzido abaixo, foi reconstituído a partir da versão grega que aparece no Evangelho de Mateus:

Avínu shebashamáim itqadash shemekha. Tavô malkhutekha, ieassé retsonekha caasher bashamáim gam baárets. Et léhem huquêinu ten lánu haiôm. Umehal lánu al hovotêinu caasher mahálnu gam anáhnu lehaiavêinu. Veal teviêinu lidêi nissaiôn ki im tehaltsêinu min hará. (Ki lekhá hamamlakhá vehagvurá vehatiféret leolmêi olamim. Amén).

Pai Nosso que nos céus santificado teu nome. Venha teu reino, faça-se tua vontade como nos céus também na terra. O pão cotidiano dá a nós hoje. E perdoa a nós nossas dívidas como perdoamos também nós aos que nos devem. E não nos faça ir para as mãos da tentação, mas livra-nos do mal. (Pois a ti a realeza, o poder e a glória pelos séculos dos séculos. Amém).

Pronúncia:

O "h" inicial é aspirado; o "qa" se pronuncia como o "ca" em português; o "kh" possui som de duplo "r", igual ao de "rato"; o "r" inicial possui som de "r" simples, como em "caro" e o "m" e o "n" mudos são labiais, nunca nasais.

A frase final:

O trecho entre parênteses, omitido nas traduções do texto grego de Mateus, é considerado um acréscimo, que reflete influência da liturgia hebraica.
